Germ+Terrain Theory = Saving Lives

In light of the pandemic, I hear a lot of people these days talking about “germ theory” and “terrain theory”.  In short, germ theory focuses on infectious agents—bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites (because of good nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, a low trauma burden, a low-stress lifestyle, a strong immune system) will fight off almost every infectious agent, becoming resilient. As they say, “Your fish is sick. Germ theory: isolate or vaccinate the fish. Terrain theory: clean the tank.”

Here’s the rub. Most who debate germ theory versus terrain theory seem to be unduly polarized and unnecessarily heavy on one side or the other...

Coronavirus Prevention With The Whole Health Green Juice Cleanse

In the face of a pandemic, we need more than just Outer Shield methods of prevention, such as lockdown, social distancing, and masks. Now more than ever, the importance of bolstering your Inner Shield so your body can be resilient in the face of this virus should you get exposed. (I wrote about lots of practical tips for bolstering your Inner Shield here.) While some Inner Shield methods take time, such as improving your physical fitness through workouts or treating unhealed trauma, some—such as doing a three-week green juice cleanse to detoxify your body and bolus it with immune-boosting superfoods, can be implemented quickly, with dramatic results.

In order to help those in our community who feel ready to embark upon a green juice cleanse with the support of a group of people doing a...

Medicine Of Connection During Social Isolation

The link between community, connection, and optimal health and longevity is well established scientifically, as is the causal relationship between loneliness, social isolation, and disease risk. In normal times, the solution might be obvious. Join a group! Attend a church! Seek social connection through activities like singing, dancing, drumming, and knitting together. We know, for example, that adults with strong, healthy social connections are 50% less likely to die prematurely...

Develop COVID-19 Resilience

In “Prepare For Reopening,” I described why you’re not a helpless victim of a potential viral attack but empowered patients who can be very proactive about preparing your body, mind, heart, and soul for the risks of reopening, whenever that happens in your community. In “You Need More Than Mental Intelligence To Get Through A Pandemic,” I offered a primer for learning to rely upon not just your smart brain, but also your other three Whole Health Intelligence—your intuitive intelligence, your emotional intelligence, and your somatic intelligence. In today’s blog, we’ll be focusing on some practical resources to help you build your Inner Shield as the Outer Shields of lockdown begin to loosen.

As reopening unfolds, you will be free to make your individual choice about wheth...

More Than Mental Intelligence In Pandemic

You Need More Than Mental Intelligence To Get Through A Pandemic:

Now that we have bought ourselves a few months of time with a global quarantine, individual states and countries will be making decisions about loosening the Outer Shield imposed upon us by our governments and public health officials. As lockdown restrictions gradually transition to masks and social distancing in public places, you’ll have many decisions ahead of you...

Prepare For Reopening: Be Proactive

Since the pandemic of Covid-19 blasted across the globe and caused us to radically change how we’re living, doctors, epidemiologists, public health officials, and the mainstream media have been focused exclusively on creating an outer shield against this infectious disease—lockdown, masks, social distancing, hand washing, etc. Such “Outer Shield” behaviors may be indicated and wise as a strategy to “flatten the curve,” avoid having our medical systems overwhelmed, and buy us time to grow familiar with this virus as we learn more about how to treat or prevent this novel coronavirus...

The Viral Wake Up Call

The Viral Wake Up Call: An IFS Perspective
By Dick Schwartz

The founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS) Richard Schwartz, Ph.D. just wrote this post about IFS in the times of a pandemic, the trauma healing, inner peace-inducing, spiritual awakening. Internal Family Systems model is brand new to you, you can start by reading my review of IFS here.

Now let me turn it over to Dick Schwartz.

“It is not that you must be free from fear. The moment you try to free yourself from fear, you create a resistance against fear. Resistance, in any form, does not end fear. What is needed, rather than running away or controlling or suppressing or any other resistance, is understanding fear; that means, watch it, learn about it, come directly into contact with it...

Before You Or A Loved One Winds Up In Respiratory Distress, Read This

We are in the midst of shockingly hard times. People my age have survived the Cold War, 9/11, and wars in the Middle East, but this out-shocks them all, putting us face to face with possible imminent mortality. As President Trump warns us, “This will be probably the toughest week between this week and next week, and there will be a lot of death.” Because death might be so imminent for so many hundreds of thousands of people, now is the time we need to be talking about our end of life desires, as hard as such conversations might be.

If that sounds unbearable and scary, please read this post I wrote first—about how Death Is No Ending...

Death Is No End – Live & Die Well

Death Is No Ending, So Let’s Try To Live & Die Well

Our experts are predicting that 100,000–240,000 Americans may die in this pandemic, an estimate some belief is overly optimistic. They say if we don’t shelter in place, 2 million Americans might die. Many more will die all over the rest of the world.

It’s not just the loss of human lives that are shocking our systems right now. We are facing so many little deaths—the death of jobs, the death of financial security, the death of community, the death of our way of life, the death of so many dreams. So many things we thought we are entitled to are now being shown to luxuries we no longer have. In addition to staring death in the face, we can no longer turn away from our entitlement and privilege...

Freaked Out About Coronavirus ( Relax)

Why You May Be Irrationally Freaked Out About Coronavirus (How To Relax)

When it comes to this coronavirus outbreak, let’s talk about fear, powerlessness, control, and trauma, just so we can understand the psychology of how we assess risk and how we respond emotionally to risk. Rationally, we can educate our minds to understand that the risk is relatively low, even in high-risk populations. The New England Journal of Medicine is estimating that the mortality rate of this virus is probably a fraction of 1%, maybe slightly higher than the influenza virus, but nowhere near the mortality rate of SARS, MERS, or Ebola. Your lifetime risk of dying in a car crash is 1 in 100. Yet you get in your car most days and don’t feel scared. Why? Because you feel like you’re in control...
